“Spring’s Light,” a reading and fundraiser , will be held at the LBCC Benton Center Friday, May 16 at 7 p.m., 757 NW Polk Street, Corvallis.  Enjoy readings by LBCC’s English department faculty and students, and a no‑host bar of wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages, savory treats and desserts. Chris Baskin, Goodoak Leaf bowl. Portland ceramic artist Chris Baskin will hold a slide lecture and workshop May 16 and 17 at the LBCC Benton Center, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Originally from New Jersey, Baskin has a long and varied background in the pottery world, and has taught at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, and at colleges and universities in Arizona and Louisville, Kentucky. His pottery provides an apt vessel to express his belief that beauty resides in the ordinary, the everyday, and the human. Baskin feels that making ceramics enables him to reach across categories and boundaries and to celebrate a common sense of humanity. Baskin will share his work at an evening slide lecture, which is free and open to the public, Friday, May 16 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center ceramics studio. The LBCC Benton Center will hold a dedication for the new art installation “inspired” Friday, May 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the centers’ south hallway, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Designed and created by LBCC ceramic instructor Cynthia Spencer's winter term “Site Specific and Multi-Part Ceramics” class, “inspired” welcomes viewers with a dance of color. Nearly 50 art works by 43 student artists are on view at the Annual Art Student Juried Show in the North Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd. A reception and awards ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7 from noon to 1 p.m. in the NSH second floor atrium. Juror Cynthia Spencer, a ceramic artist and director of the Corvallis Arts Center, will be on hand to confer more than $2,000 in cash prizes from donors and gift certificates from area merchants. The exhibit was open to students who have taken art classes at the college during the past year. Media on exhibit include paintings in oil, watercolor and acrylic; drawings in graphite, colored pencil, and charcoal; photography; ceramic sculptures and mixed-media. The show runs through June 6. NSH Gallery is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Suzanne Gaulocher and Dale Stowell have been named 2014 Linn-Benton Community College Distinguished Alumni. They will be recognized at the annual Alumni Reception at LBCC’s Albany campus May 7 at 7 p.m. Gaulocher, of Menlo Park, Calif., is currently the Director of Community Engaged Learning at Stanford University. With a focus on health, she works across Stanford’s seven schools, guiding faculty, students and community partners to increase community engagement and service learning opportunities, along with public service internships for Stanford undergraduates. Gaulocher’s work history includes both research and activism that has improved health and community engagement in the U.S. and throughout the world. Her work has focused on the intersection of human health and the environment with a focus on community engagement and equity. The Parenting Success Network will host a free seminar “Pocketful of Feelings” with nationally recognized speaker Dr. Ann Corwin Monday, May 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Linus Pauling Middle School, 1111 Cleveland Ave., Corvallis.
