Linn-Benton Community College

Dr. Robert Harrison, social science instructor at Linn-Benton Community College, will give a two-week guided tour of Florence, Italy June 20 to July 5, 2017. The tour is open to LBCC students and community members, and is also being offered to LBCC students as a Humanities credit class “The Power of the Past: Florence, Italy.” Participants will explore the Florence region and culture, including the art and ideas of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Travelers will stay in the heart of Florence, close to the Duomo Cathedral and train station. Total estimated cost including round trip airfare, lodging and meals is $2,600, or $2,900 if including the 3-credit Humanities class. A trip deposit is due by March 1, 2017. LBCC will implementing much needed upgrades and performing maintenance on several systems on the weekend of January 28 and 29, 2017. Expanding a partnership between industry and education intended to create a pipeline between high school and local living wage jobs to four additional Linn County school districts is part of a new project being financially supported by businesses, schools and a $440,000 grant from The Ford Family Foundation. Lebanon, Sweet Home, Scio and Central Linn will join Greater Albany, Corvallis and Philomath as participating Districts. The expansion also includes the Greater Santiam Boys and Girls Club, which serves youth in Sweet Home and Lebanon. The purpose of this joint effort is to provide a clearer pathway to family wage jobs in the region so that young people can remain in and contribute to the economic and social vitality of their communities. Nominations are being accepted for Linn-Benton Community College’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Thirty-three LBCC alumni have received the college’s Distinguished Alumni award since its establishment in 2005. If you know a former LBCC student who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their profession and through service to their community, now is your chance to nominate them for this annual award. A Pesticide Private Applicator class in Spanish will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College February 2 and 3. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Course may be used for recertification credits. Pesticide Private Applicator in Spanish meets February 2 and 3, beginning at 8 a.m. both days, at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-203/205. Cost is $119. The math department is in the midst of big changes to the developmental math sequence. Beginning fall term 2017, the college will no longer offer math 20, 60 or 65. Instead, the math department has created two new developmental courses, while keeping an altered version of math 95: Math 50 and Math 75.  Programs that require Math 20, 60 and 65 as prerequisites or co-requisites will change to either the MTH 050-MTH 111 pathway or the MTH 098-MTH 105 pathway. With a goal of completion in mind, the new math pathways are designed to decrease the number of classes required to start transfer level courses, as well as to provide better CTE math courses and alternative pathways for non-stem students. 2017 is already starting to be an exciting year for LB iLearn Online, with this month marking iLearn's two-year anniversary. Samsung and IS Healthcare are partnering with Linn-Benton Community College to provide state of the art x-ray equipment to its Diagnostic Imaging program. The strategic partnership will allow the college to purchase the equipment at a reduced price, completely outfitting the program.  In exchange, Samsung-IS Healthcare will utilize the imaging labs during off times for employee training and equipment demonstrations. Jennifer Clayton, LBCC Diagnostic Imaging faculty chair, cited the critical need for updated equipment for the program. "Our current equipment has served our students since the beginning of the program in 2002 and due to advances in technology will soon be out of date. Our partnership with Samsung will allow our students access to digital technology which is dominate in our industry and will be essential at helping them to transition smoothly from the classroom to the clinical environment." Brenda Tracy Sexual assault survivor Brenda Tracy will speak at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 17 at Linn-Benton Community College Cascade View rooms, second floor Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany. Tracy will share her survivor story and how she has worked at the state and national level to expand victim’s rights, help extend the Oregon Statute of Limitations to prosecute rape, and help pass additional laws to provide protection and resources for campus sexual assault victims. Tracy survived a living nightmare when she was brutally raped in 1998 by four men in Corvallis, three of them OSU football players. The attack left her overwhelmed and when she was not advised of her rights as a victim it left her feeling powerless. After the system failed her, it took Tracy 16 years to find her voice, come forward and tell her story to Oregonian report John Canzano in November 2014. “Nothing is for Free” Gabrielle Hahn, Serigraph on Kozo An exhibit of 15 serigraph prints by print maker Gabrielle Hahn will be on display through February 8 in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. An opening reception and artist talk will be held January 18 from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments provided. Hahn’s extraordinary prints merge the graphic language of tattoos with tantalizingly enigmatic text. Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center. Guided Tour QuickBooks is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system. Class meets January 17 and 18 from 2:30 to 4:20 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $89.  QuickBooks I is designed to help you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks.
