A kick-off celebration for Linn-Benton Community College’s 50th Anniversary will be held Tuesday, December 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the college Commons cafeteria, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Founding college board member and local business man Russell Tripp will attend the kickoff along with other community members. Birthday cake and refreshments will be served. On December 6, 1966, Linn and Benton county voters approved a bond to establish LBCC as Oregon’s 11th community college. The first classes were held fall term 1967, with students attending classes throughout the city. Pesticide Laws and Safety class will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College December 1 and 2. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Pesticides Laws & Safety will be held December 1 and 2, starting at 8 a.m. both days at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-205, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Cost is $119. Legacy Ballet’s classic holiday production of “The Nutcracker” returns to Linn-Benton Community College Russell Tripp Performance Center Dec. 8 & 9 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The first high school “Improv Smackdown” between West Albany and South Albany high school’s will be held Friday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. It's the "comedy brawl in Takena Hall" as improv troupes from South Albany and West Albany exchange gut-busters and knee-slappers in their first improv show, based on the popular Smackdown shows at the Majestic Theatre in Corvallis. This showcase of short-form improv comedy (think "Whose Line Is It Anyway?") features top-shelf student performers taking turns playing improv games using audience suggestions and "competing" for your laughter and applause. Linn-Benton Community College’s fall choral concert “Wrapped in Wonder” will be performed Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Conducted by LBCC Choral Director Raymund Ocampo, the concert features the college’s award-winning Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, and the vocal a cappella groups Blue Light Special and The Sirens. Kristin Rorrer will accompany on piano. Choral works to be performed include O Holy Night , The Gartan Mother's Lullaby , We Three Kings, Izar Ederrak , and What a Wonderful Word . A free International Culture Night talent and fashion show will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Friday, Nov. 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The event showcases students, faculty, staff and community members in a global show, and will wrap-up the college’s International Education Week project. This event is free and open to the public. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival School Visit Program brings actors Amy Lizardo and William Elsman to Linn-Benton Community College for two free performances Friday, Nov. 18. OSF actors will perform an abridged version of “Julius Caesar” from 10 to 10:50 a.m., and “Shakespeare Smackdown” from 11 to 11:50 a.m., which is an informative journey tracing Shakespeare’s impact on modern literature and pop culture. The free performances will be held at LBCC’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW in Albany.  The 2016 School Visit Program is funded by grants from the Bowmer Society, Sharkey Family Charitable Foundation, Joseph R. Please join us for "A Warm Red Autumn," a poetry reading featuring community members, members of the LBCC community and LBCC Student Poet Laureates past and present. This is the LBCC Poetry Club's second annual fall poetry reading at the Benton Center.  The event was so successful last year that we decided to make it a tradition.  Please join us!  We could all use a little poetry in our lives these days!

"Bee Keeper" by Beverly Soasey, mixed media. An exhibit of recent artwork from local artists Beverly Soasey, Carol Chapel, and Jerri Bartholomew titled Through the Looking Glass will be on display through December 2 in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Through the Looking Glass features paintings, drawings, assemblages and glass work that intertwines each artist’s concept of art and science. Carol Chapel is a full time painter and printmaker living in Corvallis. She holds a degree in painting from the University of Wichita with a minor in printmaking from the College of Fine Art. She describes her inspiration for the show saying, “A friend gave me a microscope. That’s how it began. . . . Bugs are complex and I must say, beautiful. I was hooked.” Beverly Soasey is a mixed media assemblage artist based out of Eugene. She has been in numerous exhibitions and holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Oreg...

LBCC Performing Arts will perform the play “The Path of True Love” 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17, 18 and 19 in the atrium outside the college Bookstore, Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The student-directed play is produced in the Commedia dell’ Arte style, a popular form of Italian theater during the Renaissance that combines the use of masks and improvisational slapstick comedy with singing and dancing. This fun, lighthearted play features many of stock characters from the original play including Captain Spavento, Isabella, Franceschina and others. The play spins the story of Captain Spavento, who decides to marry Isabella with the approval of her father, only to find Isabella and her maid, Franceschina, have come up with a convoluted plan to keep Isabella away from the Captain and in the arms of her true love.
