Linn-Benton Community College is encouraging all eligible 2016 high school and GED graduates to apply for the Oregon Promise starting Nov. 1. Applications are available online at www.OregonPromise.org . Oregon Promise provides a minimum of $1,000 of tuition support for students who are graduating high school or earning a GED in the spring or summer of 2016, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (a GED score requirement is still being established), have been an Oregon resident for 12 months, and who intend to attend community college in fall of 2016. Students are being encouraged to apply early. The program is first-come, first served, with demand expected to exceed the funding available. Those who apply prior to funds being exhausted will get support. The program covers tuition that is not covered by federal and state financial aid grants. An event planning workshop, "Secrets to Planning a Successful Event," will be held Friday, Oct. 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center, Corvallis. Two free showings of the documentary film "Project 22" will be held Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The film chronicles the 22-day, 6,500-mile journey of two combat-wounded veterans, Daniel Egbert and Doc King, who set out across America to raise awareness of the high rate of suicides amongst veterans.  Spurred by estimations that 22 veterans die by suicide each day, Project 22 includes interviews with veterans who have contemplated or attempted suicide, but who found help, support and hope in various ways. The film includes interviews with leading researchers in the fields of traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress, mental health clinicians and educators, and leading experts in warrior culture and combat stress. Dr. Greg Hamann Linn-Benton Community College President Dr. Greg Hamann was named “Pacesetter of the Year” at the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations District 7 conference Oct. 1. The award recognizes a president or CEO at a two-year community or technical college who has demonstrated leadership and support in the area of college communications and marketing. Hamann was nominated for his support of initiatives that improve the college’s image, including the backing of investment in research and design for LBCC’s award winning “Inspired” branding and redesigned web site, and for his support of implementing a system that communicates with prospective students. An exhibit of work by three art instructors from Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center will be shown in LBCC’s North Santiam Gallery, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany through December 11.  A reception and gallery talk will be held Thursday, October 29, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the NSH second floor atrium. The exhibit represents a wide range of artistic approaches brought to the Benton Center art department by the three artists; from the colorful and diverse paintings by Mark Allison, to the expressive, monumental mixed media drawings of Andrew Myers, to the delicate, sophisticated, and whimsical ceramics of Renee McKitterick. Building projects connected to the passage of the college bond measure are starting to take shape, as the HOC, ATTC and culinary classroom projects move into the construction phase. Health Occupations Center: Site development has begun on the HOC, and building construction is scheduled to begin in January, with a completion date of fall 2016. ATTC: Construction of the ATTC Innovation Center is scheduled to begin in early 2016, once federal review of the project and bidding are complete. Two free Veterinary Assistant Program information sessions will be held at Linn-Benton Community College in September and October for those interested in training to become a Veterinary Assistant. Sessions are Oct. 21 at 12 p.m., and Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, room CC-212. No pre-registration needed to attend. The 17-week LBCC Veterinary Assistant Program starts Jan. 4 and runs through April 29, 2016. Skill areas covered include basic education and experience in common disease states, commonly used medical and surgical techniques, and an introduction to hospital management, business procedures and radiation safety. LBCC is offering free pre-application information sessions for those interested in training to become a Pharmacy Technician. Do you need a job? Are you taking at least six credits this term? The college Foundation office has several student positions open to help with college fundraising efforts.  Working hours are Monday through Thursday, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with an occasional afternoon shift, contacting LBCC alumni by phone. The Foundation is also looking to fill three data entry positions for day shift hours. Positions begin Oct. 26 on the Albany campus, and include paid training.
