LBCC & Linn Libraries Consortium Host Free Film Presentation

A free screening of the documentary "Every War Has Two Losers" with filmmaker Haydn Reiss will be shown Monday, Feb. 10 at noon at the Linn-Benton Community College Forum, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Based on the journals of former Oregon Poet Laureate William Stafford, a conscientious objector during World War II, the film is presented in honor of the centennial year of his birth. Through Stafford's writings, the viewer is invited to reflect on their own ideas regarding war and how individual witness can contribute to a more peaceful world. This event is free and open to the public. LBCC Computer Application Classes

“Computers-Second Step” and “Digital Photo Books” classes will be held at the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers in February. “Computers-Second Step” helps you build on skills learned in Computers-First Step, including more features of Windows 7, Internet, email, how to copy information between programs, organize files, create folders and more. This four-week class meets Tuesdays from 6 to 8:20 p.m. beginning Feb. 4 at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. LBCC Valley Writers Series Hosts Student Poets Laureate

Student Poets Laureate Ruth Krueger and Amy Earls will hold a poetry reading as part of the Valley Writers Series Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at LBCC’s Benton Center, room BC-244, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Earls became the second LBCC Student Poet Laureate in 2009-2010.  A writer and part-time English and education graduate student at Western Oregon University, Earls also instructs an online vocabulary course at LBCC’s Benton Center and is currently writing her memoir. Krueger’s love for words came to life when she started taking classes at LBCC in 2009.  She began writing poetry, enjoying the variety of expression that can go into a poem. Krueger was an active member of the LBCC Poetry Club and, following in the footsteps of her daughter Amy, served as the fourth LBCC Student Poet Laureate in 2011-2012.  Krueger is pursuing a degree in elementary education and in liberal studies at Oregon State Universit...

LBCC Free Phlebotomy Information Sessions

Several free Phlebotomy Program information sessions will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a phlebotomist. Sessions will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, from noon to 2 p.m., and Monday, March 10, from noon to 2 p.m. All sessions will be held at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. No pre-registration is required to attend. Attendance at one of the information sessions is mandatory to register for the program. The 16-week Phlebotomy Program training starts July 28 and runs through Nov. 14, 2014 at the Lebanon Community Hospital Health Careers Training Center and the LBCC Lebanon Center. Skill areas covered in the training include medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, customer service, medical law and ethics, and phlebotomy theory and technique.  Cost for the program is $5,500. Need help preparing for your GED or improving your skills in reading, writing or math? GED/Adult Basic Education classes at Linn-Benton Community College can help. LBCC Holds Play Auditions

Linn-Benton Community College will hold auditions Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. for the upcoming play “Little Shop of Horrors” at the college’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Auditionees should come prepared to read excerpts from the play, prepare 32 bars from a musical to sing a cappella, as well as sight-read music from the show. Lebanon Center Holds ATT New Student Event

Get started in your college career by attending the Apply, Test and Tour event at Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. For new students, being admitted to the college is the first step. This event allows you to apply for admissions, take your placement test and tour the facilities all in one afternoon. Linn-Benton Community College and Snap-on Incorporated have expanded a long-standing partnership that will deepen Snap-on Tools’ support of automotive technology students and expand regional transportation training opportunities at LBCC’s Advanced Transportation Technology Center . LBCC 37th Annual Family Fun Day

The 37th annual Family Fun Day at Linn-Benton Community College will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LBCC Activities Center gym, Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd.  Children ages one to six will enjoy activities such as play dough, an obstacle course, crafts, bounce house, face painting, puppet show, putt putt golf and much more. There will also be a used toy and book sale.  Everyone is invited to attend this inexpensive, fun-filled event. Activity tickets are .25 cents each. LBCC Offers Forklift Safety Training

Forklift Safety Training will be offered through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, IC building room 103, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and un-stacking loads and driving with a load. Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer. Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Lucia di Lammermoor

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Lucia di Lammermoor, by Gaetano Donizetti, on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. LBCC Pesticides Applicator Class

Pesticide applicator classes will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College starting Jan. 23. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. LBCC Announces New Community Education Director

Chris Nystrom Chris Nystrom has joined Linn-Benton Community College as director of Community Education for Linn and Benton counties. Nystrom’s professional experience includes leadership roles at the Lane Community College’s Small Business Development Center, the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce, and in the private business sector in technology and professional services. She also has served as a speaker for multiple international organizations Nystrom has a bachelor’s degree in business finance from California State University, Chico, and an accreditation from the United States Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organizational Management. With a passion for education, Nystrom is dedicated to offering current, relevant classes that enable people to expand their interests and accomplish personal goals. She has created community and business development programs that have received awards statewide, nationally and internationally.

LBCC Calapooia Gallery Features Student Artist Audra Mote

Graphic arts major Audra Mote is the featured student artist in the Calapooia Center Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW., this month. Mote is showing a selection of her paintings, drawings and calligraphy through Jan. 31. A resident of Corvallis who grew up in Quebec and Vermont, Mote is in her second year of the LBCC graphic arts program. She has an undergraduate degree in languages and took post-graduate studies in calligraphy, drawing and painting before enrolling at LBCC in 2012. Her collection of calligraphy and art on display in the Calapooia Center Gallery contains pieces that take their inspiration from things that have special meaning for her, including family ties, poignant words and beautiful views. LBCC Travel at the Tripp Film Series “Blazing Paddles”

An exhibit of photographs of Mount Rainier by Corvallis photographer Dave McIntire will be on display Jan. 9-31 in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany. A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, Jan. 9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The public is invited. The exhibit features more than 20 of McIntire's large color and black-and-white images, many of which are being shown publicly for the first time. Several reveal the massive, 14,411-foot volcanic peak surrounded by dramatic, swirling clouds and cloaked in snow and ice. Others explore the glaciers slowly snaking down the mountain's slopes, and the many waterfalls, wildflower meadows and tumbling steams in the surrounding wilderness. Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education

Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education (CCB) will be offered through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. This five-session course will meet on Tuesdays starting Jan. 14 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, room CC-211. The course is required for CCB licensing as part of the education requirement before taking the State of Oregon CCB exam. Participants are required to attend all five of the state-approved sessions to satisfy the educational requirement for Oregon contractor licensing. The next session of the Small Business Management Program at Linn-Benton Community College will begin this month.   For small business owners, this nine-month program provides real-world tools, knowledge and expertise to manage your business. LBCC Offers Driver Education Classes

Several Driver Education classes are being offered winter term through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education. The course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation. Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education. First class session starts Jan. 6. Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund.
