LBCC and Majestic Theater Call for Participants for Play In a Day

Linn-Benton Community College and the Majestic Theater are calling for playwrights, actors and directors to participate in a 24-hour, ten-minute, Play-in-a-Day to be performed Saturday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Majestic.

Playwrights, directors and actors will write, rehearse and perform six original plays created and rehearsed within a day. This fast-paced event provides opportunities to work with and meet lots of people.

Playwrights and directors who wish to participate must submit a sample of his/her work or resume by March 26 to Dan Stone, LBCC theater director, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, 97321, or to the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center Box Office, Takena Hall, Albany campus.

LBCC Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Class

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus during the week of spring break, March 27, 28 and 29.

Designed for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration.

Class will meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. March 27-29. Cost for this non-credit course is $76.50 plus a $20 lab fee.

Preregistration is required. Students must be at least 14 to register. Additional classes will be held June 25–27, and June 28–30.

Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers Offer ABE/GED Basic Skills Orientations

Free orientations to learn how you can earn your Adult Basic Education/General Education Diploma (GED) will be offered at Linn-Benton Community College's Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers.

GED classes can help you improve your skills in reading, writing or math and prepare you to pass your GED test. Improving your skills can help you to be ready to fill job requirements or go to college.

Free two-day orientations will be held at the centers on March 19 and 20 and again on April 2 and 3. You must attend both days of the orientation in order to register for the GED class.

The Lebanon Center morning orientation will be from 9 to 11:50 a.m. The evening orientation is from 6 to 8:50 p.m. The Sweet Home Center morning orientation will be from 8:30 to 11:20 a.m. Evening orientation is held from 6 to 8:50 p.m.

It is recommended that you attend the orientation based on your time preference for attending classes. Once you have attended the free orientation, the cost to attend the GED class is $30. Scholarships are available.

Lebanon Center morning GED classes will meet on Mondays from 9 to 11:50 a.m. and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Evening classes will meet from 6 to 8:50 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Sweet Home Center morning GED classes will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and evening classes will meet from 6 to 8:50 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Small Business Introduction Course

Thinking about starting your own business? Learn what it takes to run a successful business in the course Micro Business Explore and Commit offered through Linn-Benton Community College’s Small Business Development Center.

This eleven-week course will help you determine if your business idea is viable and if it fills a potential customer need.

A free orientation session will be held Wednesday, March 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Flinn Building, 222 West 1st Avenue in downtown Albany.

The class will including information on how money flows in a small business, how much money you will need to launch your business, typical business risks and regulations and straightforward record keeping practices.

The course also explores competition your business may face and how to best reach customers. One-on-one business advising is available.

Class will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. from April 3 to June 12 in the Flinn Building. Cost for the course is $349. Partial scholarships are available.

Winter Choir Concert “Singing the Songs of Innocence”

The Linn-Benton Community College choirs will perform their winter concert “Singing the Songs of Innocence” on Thursday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

LBCC director of choral activities, James Reddan, will conduct the performances of the Concert Choir, Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir, Women’s Ensemble, Blue Light Special and the Sirens. Diana Hancock will accompany on piano.

The concert will feature songs from across the choral repertoire performed by LBCC's award winning choirs. Performances will include Make Our Garden Grow (Bernstein), Festival Sanctus (Purifoy), Plenty Good Room (Spiritual), Ascendit Deus (Philips), Keep Your Hand On the Plow (Spiritual), Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine (Eric Whitacre) and more.

Additionally, contemporary pieces will be performed including The Shoop Shoop Song and Shooting Stars by LBCC's vocal a cappella ensembles Blue Light Special and The Sirens.

LBCC Call for Nominations for Distinguished Alumnus Award

Established in 2005, the award honors alumni who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their profession or through service to their community and have completed at least 36 credits at LBCC.

A free "Turning Point Transitions" class will be offered at the LBCC Lebanon Center beginning Monday, April 9.

Turning Point Transitions is a program for single parents, displaced homemakers, dislocated workers, spouse of dislocated workers and others who are experiencing a major life transition.

LBCC Student Named OCCA All-Oregon Academic Team

Anthony Hewson, a computer science major at Linn-Benton Community College, has been nominated to the 2012 Oregon Community College Association All-Oregon Academic Team representing LBCC.

Hewson will be honored, along with students nominated from Oregon’s 16 other community colleges, at a luncheon with the Governor in April, where he will receive a plaque from the OCCA and a $1,000 scholarship from the university he plans to attend after graduating from LBCC.

Hewson, an Albany resident, is a member of the LBCC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. He plans to transfer to Oregon State University to complete his bachelor’s degree in computer science.

The Oregon Community College Association, in partnership with Phi Theta Kappa, recognizes outstanding students from Oregon’s community colleges yearly.

LBCC Free Phlebotomy Information Sessions

A free Phlebotomy Program information session will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a phlebotomist.

The session will be held on Wednesday, March 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lebanon Community Hospital, conference rooms B/C. Preregistration is not required to attend the session. Attending the information session is mandatory before registering for the program.

The 16-week Phlebotomy Program training starts July 30 and runs through Nov. 16 at the Lebanon Community Hospital Health Careers Training Center and the LBCC Lebanon Center.

Skill areas covered in the training include medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, customer service, medical law and ethics, phlebotomy and job success skills.

Travel at the Tripp Film Series “Bhutan, the Cloud Kingdom”

Join filmmaker Tom Sterling as he presents the third film in the LBCC Travel at the Tripp film series “Bhutan, the Cloud Kingdom” on Sunday, March 11 at 2 p.m. in the Linn-Benton Community College Russell Tripp Performance Center.

The last independent Himalayan Buddhist kingdom is no bigger than New Hampshire and Vermont put together. Perched on the eastern shoulders of the world's tallest mountains, this tiny mountain kingdom is a wonder to behold. It has become a tourist mecca. From the moment your plane touches down at the Paro Airport, you'll be charmed by a culture, landscapes, architecture and wildlife that is unique in the world.

A Michigan native, Sterling earned a bachelor’s degree as an Interpretive Field Naturalist from the University of Michigan. After graduation, Sterling began working as a film speaker on the National Audubon Society's wildlife film lecture tour. He has produced nine specials for television, which have been seen in over 80 countries around the world, and has produced 15 lecture films.

Travel at the Tripp is produced by LBCC Performing Arts and AAA Travel Services. Experts from AAA Travel will on hand along with the filmmaker to answer your travel questions, with prizes from AAA given at each show.

SafeHaven Humane Society volunteers will sell coffee, tea and homemade baked goods during intermission at each of this season’s Travel at the Tripp films. Cookies, brownies and muffins along with a variety of pies will be available for purchase. Proceeds support SafeHaven Humane Society, Albany’s non-profit animal shelter, which provides dog and cat adoptions, low cost spay/neuter, and other vital services to the community.

Valley Artists Join Forces for Three-person Show at LBCC

Glass artist Jerri Bartholomew of Corvallis and printmaker Paul Gentry of Independence join Corvallis painter and graphic artist Carol Chapel for an exhibit in the North Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, from March 5 to April 20.

A reception and informal gallery talk will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 in the NSH Gallery second floor atrium.

The show, “Carol Chapel and Friends,” combines Chapel’s graceful, ethereal drawings and paintings with Gentry’s exquisite wood engravings of quiet Willamette Valley scenes and Bartholomew’s evocative collages assembled within glass panels.

“I asked Jerri and Paul to join me in this exhibition because in addition to liking them personally, I admire their work,” Chapel said. “Our approaches have some similarities but our mediums vary. I feel the combination of work by the three of us will make for an interesting show.”

Chapel studied painting and printmaking at Wichita State University and moved to the Corvallis area in the early 1970s. She owned and operated a graphic design and sign company for over two decades before devoting herself to full-time studio art work in 2000. “Almost all of my work is of something or someone that has some personal resonance for me,” Chapel said. “My hope is that it tells a story, and that the viewers can make their own story from the same objects.”

Gentry moved to the Willamette Valley from Seattle in 1994, and since then has concentrated on depicting the landscape of the valley in the traditional medium of wood engraving. Although his earlier work was more expressionist and abstract, the space and light of the valley’s pastoral landscape led him in a new direction, toward more realistic, detailed studies of place.

“My goal is to look hard at the visual world, find its most interesting and inspiring forces, and lend form to those forces in the most direct and honest way I know,” he said.

A co-owner of River Gallery in Independence, where he lives and has his studio, Gentry has exhibited in the Northwest and East Coast, and recently had a piece purchased by the Library of Congress for its print collection.

Bartholomew is a biological scientist who imbeds her love and knowledge of nature in her glass sculptures. Her work combines photographic screen prints with free-form imagery within glass panels created by various fusing and cold-working techniques.

One series, which she calls “Pages from a Naturalist’s Notebook,” uses various images of Pacific Northwest ecosystems, which have been a core of her work for nearly 10 years. In another, called the “Mannequin Series,” Bartholomew uses more ambiguous photographs designed to inspire the viewer’s imagination.

“Some pieces tell stories about travel or try to create a sense of place,” she explained. “Others are representative of my own experience and tell my stories.”

The exhibit will be on display on both floors of the North Santiam Hall through April 20. The galleries are open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

LBCC Holds Black History Month Extravaganza

A Black History Month Extravaganza will be held in the Linn-Benton Community College Diversity Achievement Center on Tuesday, Feb 28 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

LBCC President Dr. Greg Hamann will introduce the artwork of LBCC student and mural artist Spike Keenan.

In addition, there will be a poetry performance “Spoken Word in Harmony,” with LBCC counselor Mark Weiss as Blues Man; a Jazz Piano and Poetry Duet performance; a Martin Luther King Readers' Theater; a video on racial equality; and a Harriet Jacobs "Loophole" installation.

There will be an open-mic for participants to read their favorite poems or readings; and anthologies of African American poetry to draw from for your readings.

LBCC Music Department Presents Faculty Recital "Dreams and Dances"

The LBCC Music Department will present its second music recital, “Dreams and Dances,” featuring LBCC music faculty and guest artists on Thursday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in South Santiam Hall, room SSH-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

The recital will feature LBCC music faculty Diane Hawkins on flute and special guest Laura Zaerr on harp. Hawkins and Zaerr have been joining forces in performance for over 20 years with Hawkins on the C flute, alto flute, traverso, and Native American flute paired with Zaerr's expert skills on the harp.

Hawkins and Zaerr's performances reflect both the power and beauty of music theory their energy and passion. The performance will feature Celtic Music, Popular Classical tunes, Original compositions, and more well known works by Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.

Willamette University professor Emily Drew will present the Conversation Project Program discussion “White Out: The Future of Racial Diversity in Oregon” at Linn-Benton Community College on Thursday, Feb. 23 from 3 to 4:30 in the Fireside Room, second floor Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Drew will lead a discussion that explores the question: What does the racial integration of place require of us, and how might we prepare to create and meet this opportunity?

A Unity Celebration will follow the presentation from 5 to 7 p.m. in the college Diversity Achievement Center, second floor Forum building. This year’s theme is “Making Connections,” including partners in our communities that engage in diversity, multi-cultural and inter-cultural work.

Drawing on 2010 census data that shows Oregon’s population becoming more racially diverse, yet the state remains one of the whitest in the nation, the discussion will focus on how although Oregonian’s value racial diversity, we have yet to fulfill the vision of a racially integrated society.

Drew, an associate professor of ethnic studies at Willamette University, teaches courses on racism, race and ethnicity, urban sociology, mass media, and social change. She earned her doctorate from Loyola University, Chicago and has published articles in Critical Studies in Media Communication, Television and New Media, and in Tourism and Cultural Change.

Through the Conversation Project, Oregon Humanities offers free programs that engage community members in thoughtful, challenging conversations about ideas critical to our daily lives and our state's future.

LBCC English Faculty Present Winter’s Light

Winter’s Light, an evening of readings and other delicacies by the LBCC English department faculty, will be held at the LBCC Benton Center on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the center lobby, 757 NW Polk Street, Corvallis.

This event is a benefit fundraiser for the LBCC English Scholarship/Program Endowment, supporting student scholarships, student writing and enrichment and visiting authors.

LBCC Valley Writers Series Hosts Peter Jensen

Author and English instructor Peter Jensen will discuss his works on Shakespeare as part of the Valley Writers Series at Linn-Benton Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 22 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in North Santiam Hall, room NSH-106, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Jensen recently published two works on Shakespeare: Shakespeare’s Name Code, a recently updated chronology of research surrounding Shakespeare’s autobiographical code, and his newly released novel, Shakespeare’s Lovers, a fictional adventure mystery that covers Shakespeare’s life in London and Stratford from 1587 to 1616. He will read from his new novel, Shakespeare’s Lovers, and will describe his journey of research and discovery.

Jensen is a faculty member in the English department at LBCC where he teaches Shakespeare, fiction, science fiction and writing. He received a B.A. in English, philosophy, and anthropology from the University of Michigan and an M.A. in English from New York University.

The Valley Writers Series is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the LBCC English Department. The series exists to connect beginning writers with professional writers and to stimulate creative writing among area students, to enhance literary awareness in our community and to encourage Oregon writers.

Dr. Harvey Kaye History Presentation on Thomas Paine

University of Wisconsin Professor Dr. Harvey Kaye will give a talk on “Thomas Paine and the Unfinished American Revolution" at Linn-Benton Community College on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Noon in the Forum building, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Kaye, a Rosenberg professor and director of the Center for History and Social Change at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, is a specialist on the life and work of Thomas Paine and author of “Thomas Paine and the Promise of America.”

His presentation will focus on how Paine’s life and ideals may help solve the crisis in America’s democracy today. A panel discussion will follow Kaye’s talk from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the LBCC Fireside room, second floor, Calapooia Center.

Kaye teaches courses on American history, politics and society at the University of Wisconsin. He has appeared on television and radio talk shows, including Public Broadcasting’s Bill Moyers Journal.

Lebanon Center: Ray Brown Presentation: "Walk Across America"

Retired history instructor Ray Brown will give a presentation on his six-month trek across the United States titled "Walk Across America" on Monday, Feb. 13 from 12:30 to 2:20 p.m. at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St.

Brown will share his experiences from his coast-to-coast walk, departing from the Pacific Ocean in Florence in June of 2010 and ending at the Atlantic Ocean in Atlantic City, New Jersey in December. His purpose was to fulfill a life-long goal of walking across America, while raising awareness of the Bill of Rights, the Constitution and American history.

SSH Gallery Show “Faces of Horror” Opens Feb. 13

A collection of drawings titled “Faces of Horror” by artist Kevin Perry of Junction City will be on view in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd., through March 9.

Perry, a former graphics student at LBCC, traces his interest in drawing to his youth. “I spent a lot of time with my trusty No. 2 pencil and a piece of notebook paper during my childhood years,” he said. “I was more interested in doodling something cool or funny to show my classmates that paying attention to the teacher.”

While drawing continues to be his favorite art form, Perry says he also has dabbled in other media, including sculpture, tattoos and monument design. He was the designer of two structures that stand outside his alma mater, Junction City High School, one honoring WWII veterans and the other commemorating the school’s centennial.

His show at the SSH Gallery is his first exhibit of a concentrated body of work, and features drawings of celebrated characters in the horror movie genre, from Frankenstein to Freddy Krueger.

“Horror fans are a rare breed when it comes to their love of the genre,” he said. “The power of a great character, whether hero or villain, is immeasurable, and I try to capture that power with my drawings.”

Polysomnograhic Technology Free Information Sessions

Free information sessions for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College.

Polysomnographic Technologists assist physicians with patients who have sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. One in four adults is diagnosed with sleep disorders each year, resulting in trained sleep technologists needed for this growing field.

LBCC’s newly accredited Polysomnographic Technologist program combines online and in-class instruction with a clinical practicum. Students will learn how to administer, score and interpret a variety of sleep disorders and their treatments.

The information sessions will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 21 and again on Thursday, March 8 from 10 a.m. to Noon in the Calapooia Center building, room CC-210, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Oregon string band Wild Hog in the Woods will perform at the LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase on Friday, Feb. 17 from noon to 1 p.m. in the center’s student lounge, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis.

Wild Hog in the Woods plays a mix of old-time, swing, ragtime, blues and tin-pan alley tunes with honest verve and gusto. The group plays an armada of fine instruments, and the sheer fun they have playing is infectious and true to their motto, "Nobody leaves without a grin."

Jim Westfall, cofounder of the Door to Grace organization in Portland, will present statistics on human trafficking and share information on the organization and how communities can get involved.

Door to Grace provides restorative care services and safe shelter for children who are survivors of commercial sexual exploitation. The presentation helps bring awareness to human exploitation in America, with special focus on Portland and the surrounding areas.

Guest speaker Jessica Richardson, a survivor of human exploitation, will share her story. She was 17 when she was trafficked from Oregon to California to Canada as part of the West Coast sex trade. Now 31 and living in Gresham, she shares her story in an effort to raise awareness about human trafficking.

LBCC 35th Annual Family Fun Day

LBCC Valley Writers Series Hosts Kim Findling

Oregon author Kim Findling will discuss her recent work as part of the Valley Writers Series at Linn-Benton Community College on Monday, Feb. 13 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in North Santiam Hall, room NSH-106, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Findling released two books this year: Day Trips From Portland: Getaway Ideas for the Local Traveler, from Globe Pequot Press, and Chance of Sun: An Oregon Memoir, from Nestucca Spit Press, a coming of age story set in Oregon.

Findling grew up on the Oregon Coast, spent years in the Willamette Valley and has lived in Central Oregon for sixteen years. Chance of Sun depicts twenty-three essays set over 20 years, where Findling traces her own coming-of-age story against the beauty and complexity of the Oregon landscape.

Her essays and articles have appeared in many magazines over the last decade, including Travel Oregon, Oregon Quarterly, Horizon Air and High Desert Journal. Findling lives in Bend with her husband and two daughters.

Pesticide Applicator Course in Spanish

Do you have an employee who has studied hard but failed the Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator license exam? Or who needs in-depth training in pesticide application and safety, or extra coaching in math and calibration skills needed for accurate applications?

The Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College is offering a course designed to prepare your senior Spanish-speaking agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam.

LBCC Hosts Freedom Rider Dr. Robert Singleton

Dr. Robert Singleton, one of the original Civil Rights Freedom Riders, will speak at Linn-Benton Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 8 from Noon to 1 p.m. in the Forum building, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Singleton, an economics professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angles, will tell of his experiences with the Freedom Ride, being arrested and jailed and what it meant to him then and now. A question and answer session will follow.

In 1960, Singleton was named president of the NAACP chapter at UCLA. He helped to recruit for, and ultimately participated in, the Freedom Riders movement in the south, where the riders set out to challenge Mississippi and other southern states to comply with two U.S. Supreme Court decisions ruling racial segregation unconstitutional in interstate travel.

On July 30, 1961, Singleton, along with more than 300 Freedom Riders, was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi, where the riders were tried, fined and incarcerated at Parchman Penitentiary.

An American Experience documentary film on the Freedom Riders will be shown following Singleton’s presentation in the Forum.

LBCC Announces Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development

Beth Hogeland has been selected to serve as the next executive vice president of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development at Linn-Benton Community College, succeeding Carol Schaafsma, who will retire in June.

Hogeland, a Millersburg resident, has served as dean for the Liberal Arts, Social Systems and Human Performance division at the college since 2009. Previous to that position, she served as the dean of LBCC Family Resources and Education from 2002 to 2009, and as a faculty member in Family Resources from 1990 to 2002.

A graduate of Florida State University, Hogeland holds a doctorate degree in human development and family science as well as a master’s in education and a bachelor’s in child development and elementary education. In addition, she earned her master’s degree in counseling from Truman State University.

Hogeland will be responsible for the planning, development, supervision and evaluation of four major instructional divisions and serve as acting president in the president’s absence, among other duties. She will start her new position April 1.

Several free Phlebotomy Program information sessions will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a phlebotomist.

The theater department at Linn-Benton Community College will present its 37th Annual Children’s Theater production of the shadow puppet play Wiley and the Hairy Man at the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Wiley and the Hairy Man is an American Southern folk tale that originated as an oral tradition amongst African slaves. The play, adapted by by Suzan Zeder and directed by LBCC Theater Director Dan stone, is about a young boy, Wiley, who must go out into the swamp to build a hound house for his dog, but is afraid that the Hairy Man is lurking nearby. Wiley has to learn how to overcome his problems and his fear.

This production is unlike any other produced at LBCC, with a movie-sized screen that stretches the length of the stage. Using the cultural art form of shadow puppetry, characters come to life in this American tale told from the perspective of the rich culture of the south.

School performances of the play are scheduled to accommodate elementary school students and their teachers, with two shows per day at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the months of February and March.

Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Madame Butterfly

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Madame Butterfly, by Giacomo Puccini, on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis.

OSU music professor Janet Hackett will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5.

Sleep Lab Technician Free Information Sessions

Free information sessions for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College.

Polysomnographic Technologists assist physicians with patients who have sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. One in four adults is diagnosed with sleep disorders each year, resulting in trained sleep technologists needed for this growing field.

LBCC’s newly accredited Polysomnographic Technologist program combines online and in-class instruction with a clinical practicum. Students will learn how to administer, score and interpret a variety of sleep disorders and their treatments.

The information sessions will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, on Tuesday, Feb. 21 and again on Thursday, March 8 from 10 a.m. to Noon in the Calapooia Center building, room CC-210, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Back by popular demand! Learn the art of making home made sausage in the class Making Sausage offered through LBCC Albany Community Education winter term.

Chef Adrienne Ewanchyna will teach you the skills and techniques that are needed to make sausage before you invest in the equipment for making it at home.

LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase Features Multicultural Singers

Several community members from the Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center singing project will perform at the LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase on Friday, Jan. 20 from noon to 1 p.m. in the center’s student lounge, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis.

After receiving a generous grant from the Benton County Cultural Coalition, CMLC created a CD project with songs in different native languages performed by community members. Most of the singers had never recorded before.

The project culminated in the recording of a CD including more than 20 community members singing 22 traditional and original songs in 10 different languages including: Sanskrit and Hindi from India; Sasak from Indonesia; French; Vietnamese; Tagalog from the Philippines; English; Mongolian; Taiwanese; Dari from Afghanistan; and Spanish from Mexico.

LBCC Offers Remodeling Your Home Series

“Remodeling Your Home Series” will be offered through LBCC Albany Community Education on Saturdays beginning Jan. 28.

Learn about the process of designing and building your remodeling project, as well as the methods and benefits of green remodeling. Bring your project ideas, sketches and magazine clippings for discussion.

Oregon Education Investment Board Community Meetings

The Oregon Education Investment Board will hold seven community meetings across the state this month to discuss the next steps to improve student success in Oregon’s public education system, from prekindergarten through to college and career readiness.

Local students, educators, parents and community members are invited to the meetings, to share their ideas to support student learning. Meetings are scheduled for seven Oregon cities beginning Tuesday, Jan. 17 at Portland Community College’s Rock Creek campus, Washington County Rock Creek Event Center, Bldg. 9, 17705 NW Springville Rd.

Zumba Toning combines body-sculpting techniques and specific Zumba moves into one calorie-burning, muscle-toning class. Students will use light hand weights to build strength and tone all the target zones.

NSH Gallery Features Three Northwest Artists

Three Northwest artists will be featured in the second annual Art Invitational from Jan. 9 to Feb. 24 in the North Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Sandra ‘sloy’ Nichols and Dave ‘nic’ Nichols, a husband-wife art duo from Salem, will share the walls with Tallmadge Doyle, a nationally recognized print-maker from Eugene.

A public reception and gallery talk with the artists will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the NSH second floor atrium.

The purpose of LBCC’s annual invitational is to showcase high quality of creative work being done by artists who live in the Willamette Valley. “We have a lot of artistic talent right here in our own backyard,” said Dori Litzer, chair of LBCC’s Fine and Performing Arts Department. “These three artists are great examples of the vitality of the local art scene.”

Doyle, who has an extensive background in printmaking, will be showing about 20 copper etching prints from her “Celestial Menagerie” and “Celestial Mapping” portfolios. Drawing inspiration from the histories of astronomy, astrology, geometry and nature, Doyle carries on an age-old tradition of storytelling through constellations and the movement of stars in the night sky.

A resident of Eugene since 1989, she studied drawing and metal-smithing at the Cleveland Art Institute and received her MFA in printmaking at the University of Oregon, where she has taught printmaking as an adjunct professor since 1997. She also has work in the permanent collections of museums around the world, from Minnesota to China, and recently installed a public art project at the University of Oregon’s new Ford Alumni Center.

Sandra and Dave Nichols will be showing paintings that each has created separately, as well as some jointly created pieces, including their just completed 50-Pound Sandbag Series—six painted canvas sandbags, one side by each artist.

The pair work together under the name “nicholsloy studio,” making it a practice to always paint at the same time and in the same 13-by-15-foot space. Dave (a.k.a. nic) said: “We hooked up 31 years ago this January and have dedicated our relationship to art ever since. Over the years we’ve whittled our names down to nic and sloy (lower case by choice).”

Nic is a painter who works with line, circles and space. Sloy is a writer whose work has evolved into word paintings.

The three artists will be exhibiting on both floors of the NSH Gallery, which is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

LBCC Travel at the Tripp Film Series “Southern Europe”

Join filmmaker Marlin Darrah as he presents the second film in the LBCC Travel at the Tripp film series “Southern Europe: A Journey to Paris, Cannes, Barcelona, Granada, Seville, Dubrovinik, and Istanbul” on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Linn-Benton Community College Russell Tripp Performance Center.

Darrah’s film is a delicious sampler package from many wonderful Central and Southern European cities; a feast of architectural and cultural highlights from Paris, Cannes, Barcelona, Granada, Seville, Dubrovnik and Istanbul. From the Seine and the art galleries of Paris, to the Moorish palaces and narrow market streets of Spain; to the greatest coastal walled city in the world, to the most fascinating and alluring city of the Eastern Mediterranean, Istanbul; this program is filled with rich cinematography and sound.

Darrah is an award-winning executive director of the Portland, Oregon-based production company, International Film and Video. His 30 years of production experience have taken him to more than 130 countries worldwide, yielding more than 70 documentary and travel-adventure programs to date. PBS, History Channel, Discovery Channel, CNN, FOX, CBS, ABC, TBN and MTV all have aired Darrah’s international footage or programs.

Travel at the Tripp is produced by LBCC Performing Arts and AAA Travel Services. Experts from AAA Travel will on hand along with the filmmaker to answer your travel questions, with prizes from AAA given at each show.

SafeHaven Humane Society volunteers will sell coffee, tea and homemade baked goods during intermission at each of this season’s Travel at the Tripp films. Cookies, brownies and muffins along with a variety of pies will be available for purchase. Proceeds support SafeHaven Humane Society, Albany’s non-profit animal shelter, which provides dog and cat adoptions, low cost spay/neuter, and other vital services to the community.

Salem Painter Explores Her Recovery from Cancer

“Painting My Way Through Cancer,” an exhibit by Salem artist Susan Trueblood Stuart, will be on view Jan. 9 through Feb. 10 in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany, Oregon.

A public reception for the artist will be held Thursday, Jan. 19, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the gallery.

The artist is exhibiting a collection of about 20 paintings made over the past four years that reflect the anguish, pain and perseverance she experienced during her battle against cancer.

Trueblood Stuart was diagnosed with cancer of the jaw in 2007 and has undergone several surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatment since then. While the cancer is currently in remission, she continues to receive treatment to rebuild and strengthen her jaw, which was ravaged by the disease.

“This series depicts that which I felt before and after surgery,” she said. “The painful and devastating and permanent effects of radiation, and my will to live.”

Trueblood Stuart has been a well-known member of the Salem art scene for several years, recognized primarily for her striking landscapes. In 1969 she was accepted in the Portland Art Museum’s Oregon Biennial, a particularly prestigious honor for a young artist, and has since held solo exhibits at Willamette University, Lewis & Clark College, the Governor’s Ceremonial Office, as well as out of state galleries.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Willamette and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Oregon.

The SSH Gallery at LBCC is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lebanon Center Offers Dance Classes

Learn how to belly dance or line dance through the LBCC Lebanon Center this winter term.

The class “Belly Dance" covers basic moves of this ancient dance form in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. This eight-week class meets on Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 12 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St. Cost for this class is $39 plus a $2 fee.

"Line Dancing" isn't just country western anymore. Learn to line dance to a variety of music including country western, 50's music and Latin. No partner needed. This nine-week class meets on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 10 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St., or from 6 to 7:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 10 at the First Baptist Church, 211 E. Vine, Lebanon.

Cost for this class is $48 plus a $3 fee. Seniors age 62 and above are eligible for a 25 percent reduction in tuition. This reduction does not apply to materials or lab fees.

Polysomnographic Technology Free Information Sessions

Free information sessions for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College.

Polysomnographic Technologists assist physicians with patients who have sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. One in four adults are diagnosed with sleep disorders each year, resulting in trained sleep technologists needed for this growing field.

LBCC’s newly accredited Polysomnographic Technologist program combines online and in-class instruction with a clinical practicum. Students will learn how to administer, score and interpret a variety of sleep disorders and their treatments.

"Computers-First Step" is a perfect class for those who have never touched a computer before and want hands-on, step-by-step instruction. The class is designed to go at an easy pace and includes identifying and using the various parts of the computer, how to use the mouse and keyboard and introduces Windows 7 and a brief introduction to email and Internet.

LBCC Offers Real Estate Pre-License Exam Course

A Real Estate Pre-License Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting January 11.

Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Brokers License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way for you to qualify to take the state exam. The local real estate market is beginning to turn around. Now is the time to position yourself for the up-turn.

This 11-week course will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Jan. 11 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. The course content will be mostly Internet based. LBCC Announces Executive Director of Institutional Advancement

Linn-Benton Community College announced Friday that it selected Dale Stowell as the next executive director to lead the college’s Office of Institutional Advancement, succeeding Marlene Propst who retired last June.

In his position, Stowell will work with faculty, staff and students in promoting the college and serve as the college public information officer. He also will lead the college Foundation in fundraising efforts.

Stowell comes to LBCC from Tacoma Community College, where he has served as the director of marketing, communication and outreach since 2007. Previous to TCC, Stowell served as director of college relations at Pierce College from 1998 to 2007, and as assistant director from 1994 to 1998.

In addition, Stowell was employed as a regional physician communication manager with Franciscan Health System, and as a publications and media relations manager for St. Joseph Medical Center, both in Washington State. Stowell also worked for several years as an editor and reporter for the Woodburn Independent newspaper and as a reporter for the Lebanon Express.

Stowell was raised in Philomath and attended LBCC where he studied journalism. He went on to Portland State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in English.

Stowell will start in his new position at the college on January 10. His starting salary will be $105,000 a year.

Classes to help you earn your Adult Basic Education/General Education Diploma (GED) will be offered at LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers this winter term.

These classes can help you prepare to pass your GED test and help you to improve your skills in reading, writing or math. Improved skills can help you to be ready to fill job requirements or help prepare you for college.

A free two-day orientation will be held at the centers on Jan. 9 and 10 and on Feb. 6 and 7. You must attend both days of the orientation in order to register for the classes.

The Lebanon Center morning orientation will be from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. The evening orientation is from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. The Sweet Home Center morning orientation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. The evening orientation is held from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.

LBCC Performing Arts Play “A Christmas Carol”

A contemporary take on the classic Charles Dickens tale, the play is set in America where Ebenezer Scrooge, a successful businesswoman, has built her money-making empire.

Stefan Seiter Aims to Make Agriculture Program a National Leader

What does it take to become a sustainable farmer? How do we grow biofuels for a sustainable future? And just what do these two things really mean?

Ask agriculture instructor Stefan Seiter. In his eighth year of instruction at the college, Seiter is working to teach students all they need to know about sustainability in agriculture, and he’s doing it in a big way.

Last year, Seiter began a nine-month professional leave of absence that would take him to some of the most innovative ecological farming education programs in the world, bringing back the best of the best ideas from college and intensive training programs across the United States, Germany, England, Denmark and Costa Rica.

His goal: To gather as many ideas as possible about teaching sustainable agriculture and ecological practices, and to integrate those ideas into a long-term vision for LBCC’s programs to help make the college a national leader in the field.

With those ideas in hand, Seiter is developing a new sustainable food systems option for LBCC’s agriculture and horticulture programs, possibly in combination with an intensive small-farms training program.

“The University of California, Santa Cruz has the closest training program in the Pacific Northwest,” said Seiter. “Currently, students who to participate in a sustainable farming program in a college setting may have to travel as far away as North Carolina.”

The success of the “buy local” food movement creates new challenges as well, and Seiter points out that farmers and agriculture workers need to develop a variety of skills to reach out to customers and be successful. Courses on how to market farm products, how to start a Community Supported Agriculture business, or CSA, and how to set up and operate a farmers market stand are a must.

“Small farmers need entrepreneurial skills to help them run their business,” said Seiter. “My hope is to develop a Farm to Table type of program that incorporates the many skills students will need to be successful.”

Besides helping students to become good entrepreneurs, Seiter learned that other institutions are teaching various practical skills such as how to run a tractor and tractor-drawn implements, or how to do small repairs on the farm, and even how to construct small farm buildings.

“These skills have a real world value for our students,” said Seiter. “I would like to see our program go beyond production and soils and really focus on how our food system works as a whole, including how to connect with customers and the community these farmers serve.”

Along with those skills, Seiter would like to include courses that teach students and growers how to add value to the food they produce, such as basic food processing and preservation. Not only does this knowledge provide additional avenues for selling the farm products, but it also provides training in marketing and sales.

“These are skills that agriculture students and small scale sustainable farmers need to develop, but which we have not taught in our programs so far,” said Seiter. “Although only about 10 percent of the students in many agriculture training programs become full-time farmers, most stay connected to the food system in their careers through jobs in agricultural production support and food and farming education, as well as food processing, distribution and marketing.”

LBCC Volleyball Coach Named NWAACC Coach of the Year

The Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges named Jayme Frazier, Linn-Benton Community College head women’s volleyball coach, the 2011 Volleyball Coach of the Year for the Southern Region.

Frazier is in her 18th season as coach, with the team in the running for the NWAACC conference championship this year. Frazier also teaches Health and Human Performance at the college.

In addition, the following players were selected for the Southern Region All-Stars team: Sophomore’s Hannah Bell, Julianna Evola, Mona Goudarzian and Lacy Wood. Honorable mentions went to freshman players Whitney Hightower and Lindsay Verboort.

LBCC Hosts 32nd Annual Bob Ross Open Invitational Nature Photography Show

The 32nd Annual Bob Ross Open Invitational Nature Photography Show will be held at Linn-Benton Community College on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Forum building, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

This is a free, non-juried show and is open to anyone to attend, weather you are showing photographs or just want to see what others are doing in the field.

This year’s theme is “My Passion in Nature.” Nature for this purpose is defined as plants, animals, landscapes, rocks, clouds, water or anything else that one finds in nature and that lacks any evidence of humans. No architecture, vehicles, hot air balloons or backpackers, ect.

Nature photographers from throughout the Willamette Valley gather each year on this occasion to celebrate nature and share their experiences, techniques, favorite places and things to see.

SSH Gallery Show “Mutual Appreciation” Opens Nov. 1

The art show “Mutual Appreciation” will open Nov. 1 at Linn-Benton Community College’s South Santiam Hall Gallery, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

The show features paintings, drawings and printmaking works from eight Oregon State University students and recent graduates, three of which are former LBCC art students. Artists include Nick Campbell, Max Krueger, Angela Lasky, Amanda Sause, Gabrielle Snider, Ira Strubhar, Christy Turner and Vesper White.

A public reception is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 18, from noon to 1 p.m. in the gallery. The show is guest-curated by former LBCC art major Gabrielle Snider, who is also a participant in the show.

LBCC Offers Crew Resource Management Class

The Linn-Benton Fire Training Council will present the class “Crew Resource Management” through Linn-Benton Community College Business and Employer Services on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany campus.

Taught by Paul LeSage, this class focuses on interpersonal communication, leadership and decision making to improve situational awareness on the fire ground and during other stressful events. Participants will gain perspective on where communication breakdown occurs and learn how to maintain “common ground” in team communications.

The class is designed for supervisors, fire and EMS team leaders, company officers, chief officers, EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, law enforcement or team members working in a high-stress, high reliability environment.

Class will be held in the LBCC Forum building, room F-113, 6500 Pacific Blvd. S.W., Albany. Cost for the course is $25 per person.

LBCC Performing Arts Presents “ScareWaves: Halloween Radio Show”

LBCC Performing Arts will present the Halloween treat “ScareWaves: Halloween Radio Show” on Friday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m. in the Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Presented in the classic 1940’s radio drama style, the show will cover the classic horror stories of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Frankenstein.

Professional Development Class "Civil Rights in the Workplace"

LBCC Holds OIT Informational Session

Oregon Institute of Technology will hold an informational session at Linn-Benton Community College on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Fireside Room, Calapooia Center building room CC-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

LBCC and OIT have established a Dual Enrollment agreement, which allows students to become concurrently enrolled at each institution. Students who intend on obtaining a bachelor’s degree at OIT can maximize credit transfer and gain access to resources including financial aid, advising and student services at both institutions.

OIT faculty will provide program information and answer questions on admissions, financial aid and program requirements. Located in Klamath Falls, OIT offers many online BA and BS programs, and has branches in Portland, La Grande and Seattle.

Programs represented include civil engineering, environmental science, mechanical engineering/technology, manufacturing engineering/technology, medical imaging (includes diagnostic imaging, sonography, echocardiography, nuclear medicine, and vascular technology), dental hygiene, biology/health science/pre-health professions, and IT/operations management.

LBCC Music Department Presents Faculty Recital Series

The LBCC Music Department will present the first in a series of recitals featuring LBCC music faculty and guest artists on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in South Santiam Hall, room SSH-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

The recital, titled “Fall for French,” features music faculty Diane Hawkins on piano and flute, tenors Jason Caffarella and James Reddan, and soprano Patty Gerig performing works by Faure, Martini, Poulenc, Hahn, Hotteterre, and Honnegger.

Tickets are $2 at the door. All proceeds benefit the LBCC Music Department to support future guest artists and provide student scholarships.

The Faculty Recital Series will feature one recital each term, with performances to be held in SSH-213. The winter term recital, Flute and Harp Dreams, will be held in February 2012, with the date to be determined. The spring term recital, American Pops and Everything In Between, will be held on May 10, 2012.

LBCC Culinary Arts Fall Banquet

The annual Fall Banquet at Linn-Benton Community College will be held on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the college’s Commons cafeteria, second floor Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Presented by LBCC Culinary Arts students, the theme is “A Taste of Fall” for the annual prime rib dinner banquet, which includes fresh greens with cranberry-walnut garnish and bleu cheese dressing, sweet potato scallops with caramelized onion, broccolini with bacon and Parmesan, and a dessert of chocolate-hazelnut torte.

LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase Features “Oldfield Road”

“Oldfield Road” will be the first guest of the year for the LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase on Friday, Oct. 21, from noon to 1 p.m. in the student lounge, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis.

Oldfield Road performs songs from many genres including Appalachian, country, gospel and pop folk. They are best described as roots music with a modern sound that reflects a real dialogue between voice and instruments.

A vocalist first, Sue Queisser looks for great melody lines and lyrics that tell a story. She and her partner, Andrew, build their arrangement on top of that using guitar, bass and mandolin, with a singer/songwriter sound.

Oregon Freeze Dry Donates $50k to Mechatronics Program

Linn-Benton Community College’s Mechatronics Industrial Maintenance Technician Program will receive a $50,000 boost from local food processor Oregon Freeze Dry through a recent donation by the company.

Jim Merryman, Oregon Freeze Dry Chief Operations Officer, recently announced the donation, which will be used- to purchase equipment for the college program.

“By LBCC teaming up with industry, they have taken the lead in helping their students become potential employees with jobs skills necessary to ‘hit the ground running’ in many industries in our area,” said Merryman. “Since LBCC has been a great partner in this effort and they have proven they can educate students to meet our needs, we are pleased to help in the donations necessary for the continual upgrade to the Mechatronics program.”

According to Merryman, students who have the willingness, capacity and behavioral aptitude to work in a manufacturing environment are desperately needed locally and throughout Oregon.

“Our employment requirements have been changing in recent years, requiring more technical expertise on our production lines and other equipment,” said Merryman. “Now, a combination of mechanical and electronic skills is required to successfully set up and run a production line. We want to help our community by providing skilled jobs and by participating in the education and continued development of individuals, including our employees.”

Oregon Freeze Dry, Inc., a world leader in freeze drying technology, is probably best known in the Pacific Northwest for its Mountain House brand of freeze dried backpacking foods.

With 32,000 square feet of freeze-drying surface, the company’s Albany plant has a multitude of processing equipment. LBCC’s two-year associate of applied science degree program is helping to meet the need for skilled technicians by providing training in troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing of equipment such as those used by Oregon Freeze Dry and other industries.

The company’s donation will help the LBCC program to purchase industry grade, integrated equipment designed for classroom training use.

“We need real world equipment for training,” says Dave Mack, LBCC Mechatronics instructor. “This is important to us because we want our students to see, touch, work on and troubleshoot on real world, industrial grade equipment.”

The equipment, along with supporting training materials, will pull together the technological principles covered in the Mechatronics program, including mechanical, electrical, pneumatics, hydraulics, drive systems, bearings, valves, process control, automation, programmable controllers (PLCs), sensors, actuators, robotics, supervisor and data aquisiton (SCADA), says Mack.

“The training equipment can be configured in a variety of ways, from simple to complex, giving rise to the principles of equipment construction, commissioning and troubleshooting, and provides a link between first- and second-year program curriculum,” said Mack. “Such equipment comes with technical documentation, which serves as an additional teaching tool for our students as they learn to read and interpret the documentation in order to use the equipment.”

Oregon Freeze Dry joins a number of other industry partners who have donated to the college Mechatronics program including Viper Northwest, Pacific Power, Concept Systems, ENTEK Manufacturing, Siemans, Damien Schmidt, Suzion Wind Energy Corporation, Target Distribution Center, the Department of Agriculture, the National Science Foundation and several private donations.

LBCC Pharmacy Technician Information Session

LBCC is offering two free Pharmacy Technician Program pre-application information sessions for those interested in training to work as a Pharmacy Technician.

The first information session will be held on Monday, Oct. 24, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, conference rooms B/C. The second session will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the same hospital conference room.

No need to register to attend. Attendance at the information session is mandatory in order to take the program.

The 17-week Pharmacy Technician Program will be offered starting February 6, 2012 through June 8, 2012. Skill areas covered in the training include customer service, pharmacy math, pharmacy laws and rules, pharmaceutical vocabulary, prescriptions, billing, insurance, industry software, pharmacology and on the job training.

LBCC Benton Center Siebler Collection Dedication

The LBCC Benton Center will unveil a collection of ceramic works donated by Bill and Jane Siebler on Friday, Oct. 21 at the center, 757 Polk Ave, Corvallis.

The Siebler Collection is a compilation of representative ceramic art from some the genre's most celebrated contemporary artists, which the Siebler’s have generously donated from their extensive collection to LBCC and the Benton Center.

The collection, which includes pieces by Paul Soldner, Frank Boyden, Christine Federighi, David Shaner, Lillian Pitt and others, will be on display in the Benton Center Student Lounge.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with introductions and a dedication and ribbon cutting by LBCC President Dr. Greg Hamann beginning at 6 p.m. Oregon potter Wally Schwab will present a free slide lecture on ceramics following the dedication at 7 p.m. in room BC-204.

LBCC Benton Center Ceramics Lecture and Workshop

The LBCC Benton Center will hold a ceramics lecture and workshop with Oregon potter Wally Schwab on Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22 at the center, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis.

Schwab has set the standard for wheel skills and brushwork decoration. Since earning his masters in fine art from Alfred University forty years ago, he has been the nucleus of many ceramics programs and offers an international apprenticeship through his studio.

Join Schwab as he shares his work during a Friday evening slide lecture from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Benton Center, room BC-204. The lecture is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, Oct. 22, Schwab will demonstrate his techniques for brushwork decoration in a daylong workshop from 10 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. at the Benton Center ceramic studio, room BC-140. Cost for the workshop is $35.

The class Living and Learning With Your Wobbler is designed for parents of babies that are just beginning to walk. Learn and have fun together through play, music and movement.
