Free “Play Day” for kids April 8

A free “Play Day” for area youth in grades K-5th will be held Saturday, April 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

"Play Day" offers several games and activities for kids and families, in the spirit of promoting health and wellness. Children can play basketball, volleyball, and other sports with LBCC student-athletes.

Outdoor sports include soccer, croquet, and a version of quidditch, the broom-riding sport from the Harry Potter novels. Families can walk along the LBCC Wellness Trail in 1K and 2.5K routes.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Event is sponsored by the LBCC Athletics Department.

The new Healthcare Occupations Centerin Lebanon is nearing completion. Diagnostic Imaging and Polysomnography will be moving their equipment and furniture into the building in May to be ready to start classes in June. The rest of the programs will move furniture and equipment in over the summer to be ready for classes in fall. Healthcare programs starting fall term include Nursing, Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Coding and Reimbursement Specialist, Dental Assistant, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Phlebotomy. In addition, the Veterinary Assistant program will move from Albany campus to the Lebanon Center starting fall term. Stay tuned for the Grand Opening Celebration for the new HOC in the fall.

Join President Hamann for the President’s Spring Forum on Wednesday, April 19 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Forum Lecture Hall 104. A variety of topics will be covered, from the college budget to Pathways to inclusion and support for students.

Call for Cars for LBCC Auto Show

A multi-class car show will be held Saturday, May 20 at Linn‑Benton Community College for those interested in showing their car.

Hosted by LBCC Industrial Technical Society, the car show will feature food vendors, industrial shop tours and a trophy award ceremony.

Cost is $20 per vehicle for advanced registration, or $25 per vehicle at the door. No limit. Gates open at 8 a.m., registration ends at 10 a.m., and show closes at 2 p.m.

The show is free and open to the public.

Free lunchtime series start April 3 in Lebanon

A free lunch and learn series and a free gardening series will be held this spring through Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center. 

Lunch and Learn Series will be held Mondays from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. starting April 3 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St. A new topic will be presented each week. Cosponsored by LBCC and the Senior Center.

Gardening in the PNW will help you sharpen your gardening skills and discover new techniques. Taught by OSU-trained Master Gardeners, a different topic will be covered each week. Class meets Thursdays from Noon-12:50 p.m. starting April 6 at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way.

Community Ed classes at Lebanon, Sweet Home Start April 3

A variety of community interest classes will be held through LBCC Community Education in Lebanon and Sweet Home starting April 3.

“Life Stories” class provides instruction on how to recall your family history in your own narrative style with detail, description and dialogue. Class meets Wednesdays from 2 to-3:50 p.m. starting April 5 at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Cost is $69.

“Dog Training I” will help you learn the fine art of training your dog. Veterinary shot records and dog history forms are required. Email lebanon@linnbenton.edu for forms. Class meets Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. starting April 6 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St.  Cost is $49.

Making Dollars and Sense of Your Business Financial Numbers

The class “Making Dollars and Sense of Your Business Financial Numbers” is being offered by the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College starting April 12.

Better understand and manage your small business financial results. Class provides practical, real-world training in the essential financial scorecards to help you understand your numbers and achieve your goals, objectives and bottom-line results.

Learn how to focus quickly on the numbers that matter to avoid problems, recognize opportunities that affect profitability, use basic scorecards to measure results, save money and increase your confidence working with figures to gain perspective in planning.

Smaller Classes and Personal Attention Helps Student Focus on What Matters

Health and Human Sciences major Arely Acosta credits LBCC’s smaller classes and more personalized instruction for helping her stay focused on what matters.

After a suspension from her university for low grades, Arely transferred to LBCC with the hope of getting back on track and back to the university. In no time, she was earning straight A’s, and it wasn't long before she decided to stay.

“I found that I needed the more personalized instructor attention that comes with smaller classes,” said Arely. “Really, LBCC would have been the best place for me to start.”

One important thing that Arely learned was how to manage her time to get things done, a skill she didn't have at the university. Staying focused, she discovered, is a big part of time management and college success.

Free “Empower Program” helps adults transition back to school

A free program designed to help adult learners come back to school is being offered through Linn-Benton Community College.

The new program, called “Empower,” is a strength-based, supportive learning program to help adults transition into LBCC and be successful in college.

The program aims to help adult learners realize their potential, develop a network of college and community support, and become empowered in lifelong success in college, professional and personal development.

Program classes are free and focus on college and career readiness, self-development, self-assessment, goal-setting and planning, support network development, and overall well-being.

Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and include computer skills, time management, communication skills, critical thinking skills, employment skills, learning styles, how to identify your strengths and more.

Windows 10, levels I & II classes, Benton Center

Classes on navigating Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system will be held at the LBCC Benton Center starting April 6.

Window 10, Level I, covers using the interface navigation, settings, backing-up data, virus protection, and using Windows digital assistant, Cortana. Basic computer skills required.

This three-week class meets Thursdays, 5:30-7:20 p.m. starting April 6 at the LBCC Benton Center, 757 Polk Ave, Corvallis. Cost is $59.

Windows 10, Level II continues from level I, and includes working in the cloud, managing security and privacy setting, troubleshooting common issues and tips on using the system.

A digital photography class starts April 4 at the LBCC Benton Center.

Learn to use your digital SLR camera to maximize features beyond auto settings and make your photos pop, including using exposure, lighting, depth of field, basics portrait tips, landscape and stop action. A brief introduction to basic photo editing included.

Tractor & Farm Machinery Safety starts March 28

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus starting March 28.

Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration.

The first three-day class session will meet Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning March 28.

A second three-day session will meet Friday, Saturday and Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning June 23.

Cost for this non-credit course is $99. Preregistration is required. Students must be at least 14 to register.

Driver Education registration now open

Driver Education class registration is now open for classes held through Linn-Benton Community College starting April 3.

Classes will be held in Albany, Corvallis and Sweet Home.

Class includes Oregon State mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a one-time parent/student orientation plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation. Skills learned could be life-saving.

Cost is $265 for ages 17 and under, $445 for ages 18 and over. Upon successful completion, students under the age of 18 qualify for a car skills testing waiver when obtaining their Driver’s License.

Real Estate Broker Pre-License Exam course starts April 5

A Real Estate Broker Pre-License Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting April 5.

Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Broker License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way to qualify to take the state exam.

This 10-week course will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning April 5 through June 7 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, room CC-212.

The course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have online capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A mandatory study session will be held on Saturday, the last day of the class.

Real Estate Property Manager Course starts April 6

A Real Estate Property Manager course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 6.

Designed to prepare you to manage rental property, this course combines online and in-class instruction to meet the 60-hour requirement for the Oregon Property Manager Pre-License course.

This seven-week class will meet on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning April 6 through May 18 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, room CC-212.

Mixed Media Painting I & II Classes in Albany

Learn to paint using a variety of media in the class Mixed Media Painting starting April 7.

The class Mixed Media Painting I uses acrylic and watercolor paints as a base while integrating a variety of other elements such as paper, ephemera and found art. All levels welcome.

SSH Gallery exhibit “As Animals"

An exhibit of mixed-media paintings and installations “As Animals” by Oregonian Brittney West will be on display through April 5 in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

West, an artist and animal activist, has been in numerous exhibitions in the central-west region of Oregon and was named 2013 Best Visual Artist in the Willamette Valley by Top of the Valley Awards.

Graduating from the University of Oregon, West knew she wanted to pursue art since a young age. She states, “I wanted to make art that was conceptual, that got me and others thinking more deeply, that planted seeds for positive change and personal growth.”

Winter Choir Concert “Cathedral Classics” March 16, 7:30 p.m.

The winter choral concert “Cathedral Classics” will be held Thursday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Performances include LBCC’s award-winning Concert and Chamber choirs conducted by LBCC Director of Choral Studies Raymund Ocampo and accompanied by Kristin Rorrer, and the a cappella groups Blue Light Special and The Sirens.

The concert is an exploration of cathedral and chapel music, with Concert choir performing works of the sanctuary with grand organ and choir pieces, accompanied primarily by organ, and the Chamber choir preforming works of the chapel featuring intimate music.  

Choral works include Cantique de Jean Racine, The Last Words of David, Kyrie from Mass in Eb, and Let My Love Be Heard.

A new exercise class to help promote back health will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center starting April 4. 

“Healthy Back” exercises are designed to strengthen and promote movement of your back to help prevent back injury and chronic back pain, increase flexibility, and strengthen neck and back muscles that support your spine.

“Improv Comedy Fest” March 9, 7:30pm, LB Theater

“Improv Comedy Fest” is coming to Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center Thursday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m., 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

This live comedy show features spontaneous scenes and games in the style of the popular TV show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"

Performers include student troupes and semi-pro troupes playing short-form and long-form improv. Audience participation is encouraged, including shouting out suggestions for scenes.

Family Fun Day will be held at Linn-Benton Community Saturday, March 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LBCC Activities Center gym, Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. 

This year marks the 40th year for the event, which provides support to parenting programs and tuition grants for the more than 2,000 parents in Linn and Benton counties who attend LBCC Parenting Education classes each year.

Activities for children ages one to six include play dough, an obstacle course, crafts, bounce house, face painting, putt-putt golf, used book and toy sale, and more. Admission is free. Activity tickets are .25 cents each.
