"Think It! Make It!" Camp a Success

The first "Think It! Make It!" camp was held at LBCC June 27-30, providing a hands-on learning experience for about 24 local middle school students who learned how to design and build a product from start to finish.

Organized by the Pipeline to Jobs project and taught by LBCC instructors, the camp gave students a hands-on taste of LBCC industrial programs in computer aided design and drafting (CADD), welding, mechatronics and machine tool, where they learned the operation of various manufacturing machinery under the close supervision of college instructors and trainers.

Students also toured local manufacturing facilities to learn about the different jobs, what skills and training are required, and how those businesses developed. The companies shared how the business started, applying basic entrepreneurship principles to understand how a single product idea becomes a business.

The Pipeline project is a local education and business partnership with the Albany Chamber of Commerce, local manufacturing companies, Greater Albany Public Schools and LBCC that connects students with local industries and college training. The partnership was created to help students on a path to help them gain the skills needed to find good jobs with local industry.

Check out this great video from the camp, featuring the middle school participants:
