Lebanon Center Offers Dance Classes

Learn how to belly dance or line dance through the LBCC Lebanon Center this winter term.

The class “Belly Dance" covers basic moves of this ancient dance form in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. This eight-week class meets on Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 12 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St. Cost for this class is $39 plus a $2 fee.

"Line Dancing" isn't just country western anymore. Learn to line dance to a variety of music including country western, 50's music and Latin. No partner needed. This nine-week class meets on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 10 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St., or from 6 to 7:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 10 at the First Baptist Church, 211 E. Vine, Lebanon.

Cost for this class is $48 plus a $3 fee. Seniors age 62 and above are eligible for a 25 percent reduction in tuition. This reduction does not apply to materials or lab fees.

Polysomnographic Technology Free Information Sessions

Free information sessions for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College.

Polysomnographic Technologists assist physicians with patients who have sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. One in four adults are diagnosed with sleep disorders each year, resulting in trained sleep technologists needed for this growing field.

LBCC’s newly accredited Polysomnographic Technologist program combines online and in-class instruction with a clinical practicum. Students will learn how to administer, score and interpret a variety of sleep disorders and their treatments.

The first information session will be held on Thursday, Jan. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Calapooia Center building, room CC-210, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Additional sessions will be held Feb. 8 and Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to Noon.

Write your family history in the class "Life Stories" held at the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers winter term.

Learn how to recall and recount family history in your own narrative style with enhancement of detail, description and dialogue. Tips on publishing will enable you to submit articles and stories to magazines as fact or fiction.

LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers Photoshop Elements Classes

Learn how to edit and save your digital photos using Photoshop Elements software through classes at LBCC’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers during winter term.

Learn photo-editing basics with Photoshop Elements I, including how to resize, save and print your images and ready them for email or the web. Go beyond the basics in Photoshop Elements II and III and learn how to touch-up and enhance your photos, how to use layers, create slide shows and use the histogram and edit from the RAW format.

These five-week, non-credit classes will begin Jan. 10 at the LBCC Sweet Home Center starting with Photoshop Elements I. Cost for each class is $54 with a $3 lab fee. Photoshop Elements II will be offered at the Lebanon Center beginning Jan. 12, and at the Sweet Home Center beginning Feb. 21, and Photoshop Elements III will begin Feb. 16 at the Lebanon Center.

LBCC Exercise Classes Offered in Scio

The class "Body Toning and Aerobics" will be offered in Scio at the ZCBJ Hall at 38704 S. Main St. beginning Jan. 9.

This class is designed to tone and strengthen all major muscle groups, incorporating aerobic activity for cardio fitness. Exercise bands, step platforms and light weights will be utilized to add resistance to the workout.

Class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 to 9:20 a.m. Cost for this non-credit class is $63 plus a $3 fee. The class will also be offered as a three-day per week class that meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 to 9:20 a.m. beginning Jan. 9. Cost for the three-day class is $81 plus a $5 fee.

LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers Presents "FAFSA: The Key to Financial Aid"

Learn how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for college in one of two free classes offered at the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers.

Designed for students and parents, the class will include a discussion on what financial aid is and what it will cover. The second half of the class will be spent filling out the FAFSA online. Contact the center for a list of information you will need.

LBCC Lebanon Center Free Brown Bag History Presentations

Free brown bag history presentations will be given on Mondays beginning Jan. 9 from 12:30-1:20 p.m. at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent Street.

The first presentation will be "Pioneers of Lebanon Oregon," highlighting some of the early pioneers of Lebanon including the Ralstons, Settles, Kuhns and others who traveled down the Santiam Wagon Road, planted their roots and made their impact on the history of this area.

LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers: Computer Classes

Are you a novice computer user who would like to learn basic computer skills? LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers are offering two beginning computer classes this winter term.

"Computers-First Step" is a perfect class for those who have never touched a computer before and want hands-on, step-by-step instruction. The class is designed to go at an easy pace and includes identifying and using the various parts of the computer, how to use the mouse and keyboard and introduces Windows 7 and a brief introduction to email and Internet.

This four-week, non-credit class will be offered at the Lebanon Center beginning Wednesday, Jan. 11 from 6 to 8:50 p.m., and at the Sweet Home Center beginning Thursday, Jan. 19 from 6 to 8:50 p.m. Cost for the class is $45 plus a $3 lab fee. No prior computer experience is required.

The class "Computers-Second Step" will build on the skills learned in the first step class including additional features of Windows 7, the Internet and email. Learn how to copy information between programs, organize files, create folders and learn some easy computer maintenance tips.

This four-week, non-credit class will be offered at the Lebanon Center beginning Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 6 to 8:50 p.m. and the Sweet Home Center beginning Thursday, Feb. 16 from 6 to 8:50 p.m. Cost for the class is $45 plus a $3 lab fee. Must have taken "Computers-First Step" or have equivalent computer experience.

LBCC Offers Real Estate Pre-License Exam Course

A Real Estate Pre-License Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting January 11.

Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Brokers License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way for you to qualify to take the state exam. The local real estate market is beginning to turn around. Now is the time to position yourself for the up-turn.

This 11-week course will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Jan. 11 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. The course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have on-line capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A mandatory study session will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

LBCC Announces Executive Director of Institutional Advancement

Linn-Benton Community College announced Friday that it selected Dale Stowell as the next executive director to lead the college’s Office of Institutional Advancement, succeeding Marlene Propst who retired last June.

In his position, Stowell will work with faculty, staff and students in promoting the college and serve as the college public information officer. He also will lead the college Foundation in fundraising efforts.

Stowell comes to LBCC from Tacoma Community College, where he has served as the director of marketing, communication and outreach since 2007. Previous to TCC, Stowell served as director of college relations at Pierce College from 1998 to 2007, and as assistant director from 1994 to 1998.

In addition, Stowell was employed as a regional physician communication manager with Franciscan Health System, and as a publications and media relations manager for St. Joseph Medical Center, both in Washington State. Stowell also worked for several years as an editor and reporter for the Woodburn Independent newspaper and as a reporter for the Lebanon Express.

Stowell was raised in Philomath and attended LBCC where he studied journalism. He went on to Portland State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in English.

Stowell will start in his new position at the college on January 10. His starting salary will be $105,000 a year.

LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers: ABE/GED Basic Skills Class

Classes to help you earn your Adult Basic Education/General Education Diploma (GED) will be offered at LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers this winter term.

These classes can help you prepare to pass your GED test and help you to improve your skills in reading, writing or math. Improved skills can help you to be ready to fill job requirements or help prepare you for college.

A free two-day orientation will be held at the centers on Jan. 9 and 10 and on Feb. 6 and 7. You must attend both days of the orientation in order to register for the classes.

The Lebanon Center morning orientation will be from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. The evening orientation is from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. The Sweet Home Center morning orientation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. The evening orientation is held from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.

It is recommended that you attend the orientation based on your time preference for attending classes. Once you have attended the free orientation, the cost to attend the GED class is $30. Scholarships are available.

LBCC Offers Small Business Introduction Course

Thinking about starting your own business? Plan to attend the class MicroBusiness Explore and Commit offered by Linn-Benton Community College’s Small Business Development Center.

This eight-week course will help you determine if you have a viable business. Learn about how money flows in a small business, how much money you will need to launch your business, typical business risks and regulations and straightforward record keeping practices. The course also explores competition your business may face and how to best reach customers.

To learn more about the program, attend one of two orientation sessions held on Tuesday, Jan. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center building, room CC-213, or on Wednesday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center in Corvallis, room BC-107.

The class will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Jan. 10 through March 20 at Corvallis High School. Cost for the course is $349. Partial scholarships are available.

Explore the wonderful and vibrant world of watercolor from the ground up in the class "Watercolor Foundations" beginning Jan. 11 at the Lebanon Center. Designed for beginners and seasoned artists alike, learn about the materials, techniques and tricks needed to help you paint successfully. This eight-week class will meet on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:50 p.m. Cost for the class is $69 plus a $3 lab fee.

A five-week version of the "Watercolor Foundations" class also will be offered at the Sweet Home Center on Thursdays beginning Jan. 12 from 6 to 7:50 p.m. Cost for this class is $39 plus a $2 lab fee.

Learn all about using the special inks, pens and paper for writing in a Calligraphy class at the Sweet Home Center. This 10-week class will meet on Tuesdays from 1 to 3:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 10. Cost is $76.50 plus a $5 lab fee.

A "Clay-Open Studio" class will be offered at the Sweet Home Center beginning Jan. 10. Increase your skills and comfort with clay as you create a self-inspired project using the potter's wheel or hand-building techniques. Firing and glazes included.
